11,007 new cases are the highest number of registered cases in one day since 19 February, according to the British authorities.
The Delta variant, which originated in India, now accounts for about 95 per cent of all new corona cases in the UK. The authorities estimate that it is between 40 and 80 per cent more contagious than previous variants. Most new cases occur among younger age groups who have not been vaccinated.
The infection forced the United Kingdom to suspend most of the remaining corona measures. The planned reopening on 21 June has been postponed for up to four weeks.
