Spain, one of the last European countries to maintain the mandatory mask outdoors

  • In France, the mask on the street is no longer mandatory from this Thursday

  • Other European countries have relaxed its use

Can we soon forget about the mask outside? Its use is relaxed in Europe and, from this Thursday, it is no longer mandatory on the streets of France (with the exception of crowded places, queues, markets or stadiums). There, in addition, the end of the curfew is anticipated, which will be eliminated next Sunday. The decision was announced on Wednesday by Prime Minister Jean Castex: “We are going to withdraw the general obligation to wear a mask outdoor. It will not be mandatory, except in some circumstances “, He said.

In Spain, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, also assured on Wednesday that “soon we will abandon the masks abroad”. Subsequently, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, refused to set a date before the insistent questions from journalists at the press conference after the Interterritorial Health Council. “It will be soon, it is getting closer and closer. We are approaching the end of this pandemic,” he limited himself to saying about it. “We are working on it in an intense and coordinated way to make it possible,” he said.

Spain is one of the last countries in Europe in which the ban on the mask on the street is maintained in its entirety. In the same situation is Italy, which has not backed down and where, for the moment, no date has been set at last of its obligatory nature. In that country its outdoor use was imposed last October (except in Lombardy and Tuscany, which did so six months earlier).

In Portugal, for example, the mask on the street is only mandatory when social distance cannot be maintained. A measure that will probably continue until the end of the summer, as announced two weeks ago by Prime Minister António Costa. The rule was imposed last October.

In the capital of Belgium, Brussels, the outdoor mask stopped being mandatory a week ago. Now it is only necessary on busy shopping streets. Brussels has already taken that step before, but after the summer holidays its use in the street was imposed again due to the rebound in coronavirus infections.

On United Kingdom, the outdoor mask was no longer mandatory on April 22. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked – yes – “precaution” after eliminating this measure. Currently, it is only required in public transport and inside shops.

Germany It is also studying phasing out its use, as announced by Health Minister Jens Spahn. In that country it is only imposed andn some very busy streets, on public transport, in shops, and in closed public spaces.

On Poland, for example, the mask was no longer needed on the street on May 15.

Also from this Thursday it is possible to go abroad without it in Andorra, as reported on Wednesday by the Minister of Health, Joan Martínez Benazet, who spoke of the “excellent situation” of the data on the pandemic.

In many European countries the use of the mask on the street is only one recommendation; and in most cases, in public spaces where distance cannot be maintained of security.

Despite everything, the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, has warned that Europe “is not yet out of danger” due to the pandemic and asked to “not relax” or stop using the masks.
