Shouts of ‘Dead Arab’ and ‘Bennett Liar’ at the Jewish Parade

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Shout “Dead Arabs” and “Naftali Bennett liars” echoed at a Jewish march in East Jerusalem last Tuesday (15/6), showing the nationalist resistance Israel against the new PM.

Known as an event for extreme nationalists, the annual Jewish march is indeed a place to attack the Arab community.

But now, the name of the newly appointed PM last Sunday (13/6), Naftali Bennett, has also been the target of ridicule from the parade participants.

The Times of Israel reported that some marchers were even seen carrying a photo of the New PM with the caption, “Bennett is a liar.”

As reported AFP, the extreme nationalist or ultra-Orthodox camp in Israel is indeed worried about the new coalition that rules the Zionist state now.

To increase strength, the coalition formed by Benjamin Netanyahu’s rival in the election, Yair Lapid, did cooperate with the Arab party, Ra’am.

A journalist from Jerusalem Post, Peggy Cidor, told AFP that many ultra-Orthodox officials are “worried about this new government.”

Since the beginning of the formation of the coalition, the extreme Orthodox parties have refused to participate. They feared the new coalition would go against “Jewish values.”

A few days before the new government was sworn in, the head of the Shas Party and former Israeli Interior Minister, Arye Deri, even publicly mocked the coalition.

“[Koalisi ini] throw all the values that Jews have cherished for thousands of years in the trash,” said Deri.

As a hard-line nationalist figure who was predicted to be the PM of this new coalition, Bennet immediately fought back.

“Ultra-Orthodox MPs can’t teach me what Judaism is,” Bennett said.

But behind it all, a professor of politics from Bar Ilan University, Ilan Greilsammer, says that the ultra-Orthodox side’s concerns are not simply “Jewish values.”

According to him, so far there are two major ultra-Orthodox parties in Israeli politics, namely the Shas Party and United Torah Judaism (UTJ).

During Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration, UTJ held control of the parliamentary finance committee. But now, they have lost control of the committee.

In addition, some ultra-Orthodox camps are also worried that this new coalition could bring Judaism values from other sects.
