92 years after the triumph against Chelsea

On the Union side, the year 1929 marked one of the most important moments in its history: it had inaugurated the April 15 Stadium, as well as a sports center in its definitive plaza, located on López y Planes Avenue.

After this small location in the socio-historical context, the date on the calendar that is located in the history of the “Tate” marks June 17, 1929. Union forged a historical triumph over the Chelsea, a team that, at that time, was cherishing promotion to the First Division, what we now know as the “Premier League”; one of the most powerful leagues on the entire planet.

This confrontation against Union, occurs in the search for more interesting challenges for Chelsea, who traveled from England to the American continent in search of them. Boat training and “diving” on the deck, were the preparations of the English “players” at that time. The tour lasted about a month and a half, in which the English team played 16 games.

In the middle of this journey through South American lands (they played friendly matches in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay), the Tatengue team appeared, who would wait for him in Santa Fe in the middle of an imposing frame in the nascent 15 de Abril Stadium. Chelsea had just beaten 1-0 against the Argentine Amateur Association (on River’s court) and 2-0 against San Lorenzo de Almagro. They also drew 1 to 1 with Independiente, but the surprise would come from the rojiblanco team.

Unión would win that afternoon 5-0 with a triplet from Francisco Valiente, and the remaining goals from Acosta and Beltramini. Beyond the gigantic time the presence of the London team -in 2003, due to the inflow of capital after the arrival of Abramovich, the club won various titles-; the victory of the Tatengue team against an English team, would be recorded in football history books. For later there would be the definitive entry to the AFA tournaments, the promotions, and the most recent milestones in the red-and-white history.

– The match could have been played a day earlier, on June 16, 1929, due to the publication of a medium from that time that was compiled by the “Glorious ´89” Group. To date, it is sought to determine with more reliable sources the meeting on that day, despite the fact that, in official publications of the Union Club, the date of June 17 appears. It is a mystery that will be revealed very soon to certify this story.

– What attracted the most attention after the arrival of the English team to Santa Fe, it was that his uniform had numbers, something very novel for the time. At the global level, it took several decades for its final implementation, as the height of the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where its use was mandatory.
