While World Blood Donor Day was held at the beginning of the week, Monday June 14, 2021, the French Blood Establishment calls for mobilization. As the summer holidays approach, blood reserves in France are low. However, these donations are precious to meet the needs of hospitals, in all circumstances, pandemic or not.
But some still wonder: can you donate blood if you have been infected with Covid-19? And after being vaccinated against the coronavirus? We take stock.
Having been infected with Covid-19 does not prevent donating blood
The EFS hammers it: there is no risk to donate blood if you have been infected with Covid-19. In the event of recent contamination, however, a precautionary period must be observed before giving:
- 28 days after onset of symptoms or 14 days after symptoms disappear
- if you are asymptomatic with a positive Covid-19 test, 14 days from the date of the test
- if you are in contact, 14 days after the last contact with the infected person, unless the PCR test is negative
At this stage of knowledge, the virus is only present in the blood in case of severe symptoms of the disease, but no donation is allowed in case of symptoms. (…) Despite the hundreds of thousands of transfusions performed every day around the world, no case of transfusion transmission has been reported since the start of this epidemic.
The EFS also recalls that SARS-CoV-2 is a respiratory virus, which is transmitted through the airways and not through the blood. It is for this reason that “it is not useful to set up a screening of blood donors. “
And after the vaccination?
Again, vaccination against Covid-19 does not constitute a contraindication to donate blood. “In the vast majority of cases, it is possible to donate blood after an injection of the Covid-19 vaccine, without any postponement period to be observed“, Indicates the organization.
It is only in cases of vaccination outside the EU or as part of a vaccine trial that a 28-day deadline must be observed before donating blood.
Note that it is also possible to donate blood after any vaccination. A period of four weeks must be observed after vaccination against the following diseases: hepatitis B, mumps, measles, rubella, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella in the same vaccine), tuberculosis (BCG), chickenpox, shingles, yellow fever.
” If you are vaccinated against other diseases (for example: influenza, whooping cough, tetanus, etc.), blood donation is authorized unless the vaccination was carried out when you had been exposed to the disease: in this case, it will usually be necessary to wait one to several weeks for be able to donate blood, ”says the government website vaccination-info-service.fr.
