Patients with severe COVID-19 are very unlikely to experience reinfection

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

New research reveals potential for patients with infection Covid-19 severe reinfection is very small. The results of the study said the percentage of possible reinfection is less than 1 percent.

The researchers reviewed data from 62 US health care facilities. They found 63 of the 9,119 patients (0.7 percent) with severe Covid-19 infection contracted the virus a second time, with an average reinfection period of 116 days.

Of the 63 reinfected, two (3.2 percent) died. Patients categorized as non-white have a greater risk of reinfection than white patients.

“Our analysis also found that asthma and nicotine dependence were associated with reinfection,” said Adnan I. Qureshi, professor of clinical neurology at MU School of Medicine.

Qureshi defines reinfection as two positive tests separated by an interval of more than 90 days after the initial infection has resolved, as confirmed by two or more consecutive negative tests.

He analyzed data from patients who received serial tests between December 2019 and November 2020.

“The important message here is that re-infection of Covid-19 after the initial case is possible, and the duration of immunity conferred by the initial infection is not entirely clear,” he said.

According to Oxford University Press, researchers conducted a logistic regression analysis to identify demographic and clinical characteristics associated with reinfection. Logistic regression analysis identified that asthma and nicotine dependence/tobacco use were associated with reinfection.

There were significantly lower rates of pneumonia, heart failure, and acute kidney injury observed with reinfection compared with primary infection among the 63 patients with reinfection.

“We identified a low rate of reinfection confirmed by laboratory tests in a large cohort of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Although reinfection appears to be milder than primary infection, there are associated deaths,” the researchers said.
