GENEVA (ILO News): World leaders and representatives of governments, workers ‘and employers’ organizations to speak at the virtual summit of the International Labor Conference on the world of work to be held from 17-19 June.
An integral part of The ILO World of Work Summit is an integral part of the International Labor Conference, the Summit will address the response to the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the world of work and on action required to build a better future of work.
On June 17 at 11:00 a.m. GMT (1:00 p.m. CEST), the first day of the Summit will begin with video speeches by the Pope Francis, of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, of President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, of Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa and you US President Joe Biden (in order of passage).
The high-level speeches will be followed by a conversation between the Director-General of the ILO, Guy Ryder, the Secretary-General of the International Organization of Employers (IOE), Roberto Suárez Santos, and the Secretary-General of the International Trade Union Confederation. On the second day of the Summit, June 18, a moderated debate will bring together labor ministers from Côte d’Ivoire, Mexico, Portugal and Sri Lanka. The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the financing of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Mahmoud Mohieldin, will also participate, as well as representatives of workers ‘and employers’ organizations.
Panelists will discuss responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and what it revealed about deep labor market issues. They will also look at the challenges of multilateralism and at key areas where action is needed to build a world of work that provides decent jobs and social justice for all.
