The board of the Russian capital Moscow wants to oblige 60 percent of people who work in services to be vaccinated with a corona vaccine. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reports on his website that a decree has been issued.
The obligation applies to sectors where contact with people is unavoidable, from gyms to beauty salons and from catering to transport and municipal services. “If you work in an organization that serves people, then in an epidemic it’s certainly not just your business, no matter what personal protective equipment you use.”
Complicit
Sobyanin says it’s a personal choice if someone wants to be vaccinated “when you’re just sitting at home”. “Protect yourself or hope everything will be fine,” he writes.
“But when you enter public spaces and come into contact with other people, voluntarily or unintentionally, you become complicit in the possible spread of the virus.”
The infection rates in Russia have been rising for some time. Almost 14,000 new infections were registered last day. This brings the total to more than five million.
In total, more than 127,000 corona patients have died. Yesterday there were almost 400 more deaths, 70 of them in Moscow. “You wouldn’t wish such a death on anyone,” writes the mayor. “Most of these people wouldn’t even have gotten sick if they had gotten the corona vaccine on time.”
raffle cars
Last week, the mayor announced that he will raffle cars among people who have been vaccinated. He is going to give away five cars worth around 11,500 euros each.
Sobyanin does this because he thinks there is too little enthusiasm among Moscow residents to be vaccinated. A few weeks ago, he said that only about 1.3 million of the more than 12 million inhabitants have had a first shot.
