Supermarkets were initially allowed to give a 50 percent discount, but from 1 July that has been halved to 25 percent. From next month, promotions such as ‘two get one pay’ will no longer be allowed, says Peter Wolf, director of the Responsible Alcohol Consumption Foundation (STIVA), to Nu.nl.
The new law aims to combat problematic alcohol abuse. Parents who buy alcoholic beverages for their children under the age of eighteen in a pub or restaurant are also punishable.
Happy hours
Nothing will change about happy hours in the catering industry. A few years ago, municipalities were given the option to prohibit this. Half of the municipalities do this now, but the rest do not.
According to the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), anyone who violates the rules can be fined, which varies between 1,360 euros and 5,440 euros. The amount of the fine depends on several factors, including the size of the company and whether there have been previous incidents.
