Elections in Peru: Castillo narrowly wins, Fujimori’s resistance awaits

According to Reuters, Fujimori is now expected to try to challenge the results in court. The politician had previously pointed out the alleged fraud without any concrete evidence and tried to get some votes to be canceled. U.S. organizations and other international groups said they had no evidence that the second round of presidential elections in Peru would be accompanied by widespread irregularities.

The difference between the candidates was 44,058 votes. While Castillo managed to gain the support of poorer voters in rural areas of Peru, Fujimori scored points for richer voters in cities. Reuters warned that the results could have a significant impact on the mining industry in the country, which is the second largest copper producer in the world. Castillo said in the campaign that he wanted to cancel contracts with mining companies.

The main theme of the campaign was the fight against covid-19 and corruption. Fujimori, who has run for president for the third time, is also accused of corruption and money laundering.

The previous presidential election in 2016 ended in a close result, in which Pedro Pablo Kuczynski defeated Fujimori by about 43,000 votes. Even then, the candidate talked about fraud, which could not be proven.
