The parachutist tried to land on the lawn, where the players were already standing ready for the opening whistle, but he managed it only with great difficulty. He almost finished in the stands among the spectators, he still managed to get into the air and land relatively safely on the lawn. The organizers then took him out of the stadium.
However, he injured several spectators who had to be treated in a hospital, the British agency PA quoted from the opinion of the European Football Union (UEFA).
“We’re so sorry.” said a spokesman for Greenpeace for the dpa agency, noting the event “had no intention of disrupting the match or injuring people”: “Unfortunately, it didn’t go according to plan.” The intention was for a large latex ball to fall on the field and the parachutist to leave with the help of an engine. In this way, Greenpeace wanted to protest against Volkswagen.
