North Korea acknowledges “tense” food situation / Day

North Korea, which is subject to various international sanctions imposed in response to the communist regime’s nuclear program, is constantly struggling with food insecurity.

Last year, the situation was further complicated by a pandemic, as well as summer storms and floods.

At a meeting of the Central Committee of the ruling Korean Labor Party, Kim said that the economic situation had improved this year and that industrial production had increased by 25% compared to last year, the Pyongyang official agency KCNA reported.

However, due to various problems, there has been a “series of deviations,” Kim admitted.

Due to last year’s storms, the agricultural sector has not fulfilled the harvest plan, and the food situation is becoming “tense”, the leader of the communist regime added.

The “prolonged nature” of the Covid-19 pandemic was also discussed at the meeting, KCNA reports.

North Korea has introduced strict quarantine measures since closing its border with China in January last year.

Although Pyongyang has long claimed that no cases of infection have been identified in the country, which experts question, North Korea has suffered heavy economic losses as a result of quarantine measures.
