Defense has already spent more than 650,000 euros on the hunt for Conings | Inland

Expenses mainly include material and fuel costs, but also the extra premiums paid to the soldiers (sometimes mobilized on weekends). In addition, the Ministry of Defense made various armored vehicles available as part of the investigation, as well as an NH90 combat helicopter.

46-year-old Jürgen Conings disappeared on Monday 17 May after taking weapons and ammunition from the Leopoldsburg barracks. He has aimed, among other things, at virologist Marc Van Ranst, who was placed in a ‘safehouse’ with his family. After several large-scale searches, Conings remains untraceable for the time being.

After more than three weeks, a first real track seemed to have been found last week. A black backpack, filled with hunting ammunition, medicines and provisions. The federal prosecutor’s office is “80 to 90% sure” that it is Conings’s. This may indicate that the soldier is more heavily armed than initially thought by the investigators.
