(Bloomberg) – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo lifted pandemic restrictions in the state, arguing that 70% of the adult population has already received at least one dose of one of the vaccines against the coronavirus.
New York, one of the top contagion points in the United States, now has the lowest positive test rate in the country, according to Cuomo. The governor, who wrote a book about his leadership during the pandemic, lifted all remaining mandates and restrictions on businesses and residents.
“It’s been a very, very long road,” Cuomo said Tuesday during a news conference at One World Trade Center in New York. “Life is no longer about survival; life is about living ”.
Cuomo, shut down the state more than 15 months ago as Covid-19 spread. The restrictions paralyzed the state’s economy and caused some businesses, particularly in New York City, to close for good.
Since the start of the pandemic, more than 2 million New Yorkers have tested positive for COVID-19, and more than 42,000 have been confirmed dead. The total number of deaths in the United States has exceeded 600,000.
Cuomo had blamed the Administration of former President Donald Trump for allowing more than 3 million people to travel from Europe to the United States through New York-area airports after COVID-19 began to spread.
In late 2020, the state battled a resurgence of the virus and has been on the road to recovery in recent months as more vaccines are applied. Test positivity fell 0.41% as of June 13, from 7.94% in early January.
