In the wake of World Blood Donor Day, a call for generosity is launched to all Martinicans. If 3,000 patients are treated each year thanks to the blood products collected thanks to the operations carried out on the territory, Martinique is not self-sufficient.

A blood donation to treat and assist the sick, this is a solidarity action that comes back regularly but for which there will never be enough donors. In Martinique, the French blood establishment (EFS) estimates that around sixty bags collected each day would be needed for safe operation.
In Martinique as in the rest of French territory, the observation is there, the collections are not at the level expected by health professionals. Despite the health situation undergone for a year, EFS Martinique has been able to “retain” regular donors to ensure the continuity of this public service. But this is not enough. However, the hope of finding a larger number of donors is well anchored in the minds of technicians and volunteers from associations working alongside the EFS.
A call for generosity is launched so that as many blood bags as possible are collected before the summer holidays.

Looking for regular donors
Despite the proliferation of mobile blood drives operated both in the municipalities and at the Maison du don on the CHU site in Fort-de-France, self-sufficiency is still not guaranteed, due to a lack of new donors (700 new in 2020 against more than 1,500 in previous years)
World Blood Donor Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the generosity of donating blood. In Martinique, we are still not self-sufficient even if we collect all week almost all year round. We would need 60 bags collected per day to provide a service to meet the demands.
The Covid period with the restriction of travel and fears generated by the pandemic have impacted collections
However, it is important on the eve of the summer holidays that old and new donors come to the collection points so that we have a sufficient stock of blood products. June is festive but making a donation is important for the safety of the people of Martinique.
During these few days, the Martinican week of blood donation will be deployed with collection points across the territory. After Fort-de-France yesterday (June 14), the EFS teams will be
- Tuesday June 15, Place Joyeuse at Trinté 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Wednesday June 16, Place des Fêtes at Ducos 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Thursday June 17, Le Rond-Point shopping center at Fort-de-France 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Friday June 18, Place Clarissa Jean-Philippe at Sainte Marie 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Saturday June 19, Parking du Stade at François 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Donation house at the CHU la Meynard remains open and welcomes the public
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (exceptional opening) and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Thursday from 12 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

The EFS teams hope that Martinican solidarity and generosity will be expressed again this week to restore stocks.
In line with this blood donation week, the EFS invites donors to come forward with “Take over, a month to give all“until July 9. The objective is clear, to raise awareness and encourage donations on the occasion of the campaign around the Martinique week of blood donors … with the hope that donors for a day transform the ‘try and become regular donors.
This week, at each collection point, activities will be offered before the big closing day at Le François with an artistic platform to thank these generous donors.
