The city, school social work and the school office offer a catch-up program for children from Gießen during the summer holidays. The focus is primarily on language acquisition and social education.

It is not the case that the corona pandemic only had an impact on schoolchildren’s ability to grasp the subject matter. At the same time, many had fewer social contacts, were less active and – with a view to children and young people from immigrant families – spoke less German. This is what school department head Astrid Eibelshäuser and Ralf Volgmann, managing director of Gießen @ Schule gGmbH, which is responsible for school social work, say. That is why the city, together with the school administration office and Gießen @ Schule, has launched a catch-up program for the summer holidays.

At a press conference in the Japanese Garden of the Congress Hall, Eibelshäuser emphasized that the offers for around 100 children and young people will take place in addition to the learning camps in the individual schools. The focus of the city is on the combination of linguistic competence and leisure-time educational offers.

Holiday program in Giessen: three weeks freely selectable

In addition, there is holiday care for the Giessen pupils at the primary schools. Here parents can choose three weeks to care for their child or children. These are looked after in the Goetheschule in the city center and in the White School in Wieseck. 50 children can take part per facility – always in small groups, of course, in order to comply with hygiene and distance rules, emphasized Uta Hinkelbein, head of the school administration. Sabine Jörren, who works there as the educational director, also underlines the increased staffing ratio and the quick tests that are available to the children.

Holiday care at the primary schools begins at 7.45 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. The children have breakfast and lunch in small, fixed groups. The specialists organize content-related offers and excursions. In addition, the pupils can dial into working groups.

The following offers are also available under the leadership of Gießen @ Schule:

Learning German together with Mukki: The project is aimed at children in grades one and two who have immigrated in recent years and are learning German as a second language. Singing together, says project manager Claudia Jirka, should not only strengthen the sense of community, but also language skills. This was urgently needed due to the inconsistent teaching during the pandemic, she emphasized. The meeting point is the Georg Büchner School, August 16-27, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Info: mukkiprojekt @ giessenatschule.de

Summer language camp: The target group are children in grades five and six who are learning German as a second language. As Frank Unger from Gießen @ Schule says, the offer is a mixture of German courses, games, excursions as well as sporting and creative activities. Among other things, a city rally, a visit to the swimming pool and a bike tour are planned. The venue from July 19 to 23 is the Ricarda Huch School from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.: [email protected]

Holiday program in Giessen: music theater along line 12

Kulturkoffer: Here children between nine and twelve years of age are addressed who live in the northern part of the city and are in transition from elementary school to secondary school. With the help of a music theater entitled “Where are you going?” They are supposed to explore the area along bus line 12 and capture it artistically. Cooperation partners are the city theater and the painting school Gießen. More information by email to [email protected]

German Summer: This offer has been around for five years. It is aimed at third-grade students from primary schools in Giessen. It is an intensive program that aims to combine German, theater and social education. Astrid Lindgren’s book “Ronja the robber’s daughter” forms the thematic framework for the offer. There is a language test beforehand; Parent work is also part of the concept. In addition to the city, cooperation partners are the Hessian Ministry of Culture and the Education Authority. The meeting point is the Korczak School from July 19 to August 6, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (info @ giessen @ schule.de).
