They advanced to the final tournament for the seventh time in a row, being the only team to defend the trophy. They won the European Championship in 2008 and then four years later. In 2010, they also became world champions.
They met Sweden already in qualifying. One match was won 3: 0, the other ended in a draw 1: 1.
The Swedes have a successful preparation: they defeated Finland (2: 0) and Armenia (3: 1). They also did well in qualifying for the World Cup, in which they defeated Kosovo and Georgia in March.
