At 10 p.m. it was over: Police officers and a security service enforced the nightly closure of the Main Quay in Würzburg. For two weekends, the city closes the popular meeting point along the Main. Partying teenagers had recently caused trouble.
Police estimate 400 people on Mainkai
The first nightly closure on the Mainkai in Würzburg was peaceful, according to the police. According to police estimates, around 400 people were there that evening. “The mood was absolutely peaceful and the people on site almost exclusively cooperative,” said a police spokesman when asked by the BR. There were no incidents during the evacuation. Officials from the Würzburg City Police Department and support staff from the riot police were involved in the evacuation.
Relocation of the celebrants to other locations?
The closure of the Main Quay caused criticism in advance, as did a nocturnal alcohol ban as the first consideration of the city of Würzburg. It was feared that the celebrants would then simply relocate to another location, such as the Ringpark. The police could not detect such a shift in the first night when the Main Quay was closed. There was only one major traffic on the Juliuspromenade at night in the city center – but it is questionable whether these were people who had previously been on the Mainkai.
Noise pollution and non-compliance with corona rules
The closure is a consequence of the city of Würzburg, because there have been problems with partying young people on the “party mile” along the Main. This has now reached such proportions that in the area along the party mile on Mainkai it is no longer possible to think about a night’s sleep, according to the city of Würzburg. In addition, the celebrants had completely destroyed several freshly planted flower beds along the Main, so that property damage had also occurred. “Unfortunately, the limit has been crossed. Have fun outdoors, yes, violations of corona restrictions and partying at the expense of the residents – no,” said Würzburg’s Lord Mayor Christian Schuchardt (CDU), commenting on the decision.
Green areas closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The closure of the green spaces on the Mainkai applies on this and the following weekend on Fridays and Saturdays, i.e. on June 11th and 12th as well as on June 18th and 19th, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. According to the city, the area will be secured with security and the help of the police so that the regulation is complied with. As early as 8 p.m., security guards will inform about the impending closure. From 9:30 p.m. the closure will be announced with the help of an illumination of this area. The official outdoor catering in the area of the old crane is not affected by the closure.
