Éric Zemmour, the controversial machine that overshadows Marine Le Pen

Whether or not he is a candidate for the 2022 presidential election, the star columnist has acquired an influence that will allow him in any case to influence the electoral campaign, explains Politico.

This is the man that Marine Le Pen says beside him she looks reasonable. Not a week goes by without Eric Zemmour launching a controversy over immigration, sexism, Islam or gender issues. Now, the question that haunts Parisian circles is: will he use his notoriety as a springboard for the Élysée?

Zemmour, a journalist who has become a celebrity, has been convicted several times for incitement to hatred and it is, according to some, he who brings sexist and racist discourse to the general public. Yet even his political opponents admit that his meteoric rise on television shows that he is exploiting France’s declining vibe.

His diatribes are deemed so inflammatory that his daily shows are taped in advance and verified before being broadcast. In early June, for example, Zemmour compared puberty-blocking treatments for trans children to the medical experiments of the Nazis. The accusations of sexual assault to which he is the subject contribute to straining the debate on his influence.

An unlikely flag bearer of the far right

Marine Le Pen takes the threat of Zemmour’s candidacy so seriously that she called on her father Jean-Marie, whom she had excluded from the party, to help. Zemmour “Could prevent the National Assembly from reaching the second round”, she confided in a private conversation.

Marine Le Pen is preparing to run for the presidential election for the third time [en 2022] and the polls put her neck and neck with Emmanuel Macron. Now that she has given up some of her more radical positions, she risks being vulnerable to an attempt to overrun her right.

Zemmour, a thin, lean man who has written several books on French politics and history, appears at first glance to be an unlikely flag bearer of the far right. Yet for years he has been the beacon of the movement of new reactionaries, a group of writers who denounce the “Domination of the left”. His numerous works explain that France has been in decline since 1968, abandoning itself to the forces of laissez-faire, to immigration without control and to Islam.
