BabatPost.com Crossed eyes or in medical terms known as strabismus is a vision disorder that not only affects children, but can also affect adults. There are various types of examinations that need to be carried out to determine the type and severity of the eye squint so that treatment can be carried out optimally. The following will describe five eye tests or examinations that can be performed on people suspected of having a squint.
Various checks for squint
To ensure the correctness of a squint, here are the examination options that you can undergo.
1. Visual examination (eye acuity test)
A visual acuity or visual acuity check needs to be done on you or children suspected of having a squint to ensure both eyes have good visual acuity.
Not infrequently people with crossed eyes, especially children, are accompanied by lazy eyes or commonly known as amblyopia.
Visual acuity checks can be done according to the age of the child.
In children under 2 years, it can be done with a special tool containing pictures that can be mentioned by the child.
When the child can read the letters well, eye acuity examination can be done using the letters of the alphabet, similar to the examination in adults.
2. Test the movement of the eyeball
The movement of the eyeballs in the eight cardinal directions and also the position of the eyes when looking ahead are the components that will be assessed in this eye test method.
A small flashlight will be used as a direction indicator to be followed by the eyes. In each wind direction, a cover test will also be performed.
3. Cover test
This test is done to find out if someone with normal-looking eyes actually has a hidden squint.
The test will be done by closing one side of the eye in turn. Next, the ophthalmologist will see whether or not there is movement in the eyeball.
Under normal circumstances, there will be no eyeball movement even if one of the eyes is closed.
4. Hirschberg eye test
This test is performed to determine the degree of squint in the eye that is already seen squinting in a normal position.
The examination is carried out by using a small flashlight that is pointed at the eye after previously being asked to look at certain objects in the distance.
Under normal circumstances, the light reflection of the flashlight will be right in the center of the pupil.
However, in people with squint eyes the reflection of light will be in the opposite direction to the direction of squint eyes.
The shift of reflected light from the center of the pupil to the new reflected point will be measured to determine the approximate degree of squint.
5. Examination of the inside of the eyeball
This eye test is done by using a special instrument to look inside the eyeball, called a funduscopy.
This examination needs to be done in both eyes to rule out possible disorders within the eyeball, such as retinoblastoma (eye cancer).
