Plaza Brasil: Eviction depends on the Municipality of Iquique

Despite the coordinated work of the Iquique Provincial Government with the Carabineros, the PDI and the International Organization for Migration, IOM, Plaza Brasil continues to be the “heritage” of Venezuelan migrants that generate a series of incivilities that affect those who live in the sector. .

With Hugo Marín, Sonia Moreno and Silvia Prieto, Governor René Muñoz met to inform them of the coordinated work that the government has carried out in Plaza Brasil, a public space occupied by Venezuelan migrants since January that, in the opinion of the three social leaders, has transformed into a source of unhealthy conditions, constant robberies and drug trafficking.

For the leaders, who demand to be heard in the search for a comprehensive solution that respects the human rights of migrants, the situation in Plaza Brasil is unsustainable, seriously affecting the quality of life of those who live in the O ‘collective. Higgins or in the surrounding sectors. “Our idea is that the rights of migrants are respected, but we want to be part of the solution to recover that square that is the patrimony of the people of Iquique and that today has become an insular and insecure place. There are daily robberies, so we request greater police protection for our neighbors, ”said Hugo Marín.

For Governor René Muñoz, the steps taken meant ending the street situation of hundreds of migrants, specifying that without this management, coordinated by the government, there would be five or six public spaces in a situation similar to that of Plaza Brasil. And in this area, Muñoz stressed that he has had the best disposition to work together with other entities and jointly seek a definitive solution to the problem of the Plaza Brasil.

When asked why the square is not evicted, the governor specified that the Municipality of Iquique manages that public space and according to current regulations they are the ones who must request it from the government, a request that the municipality has not made, despite that on May 25, a letter was sent to Mayor Mauricio Soria indicating the information that he should include in the request for eviction.

ACTIONS

Since January 14, when the Iquique Provincial Government carried out the first cadastre, more than 400 migrants have arrived at Plaza Brasil, of which 350 have left the place, due to the coordinated intervention of the government and the International Organization to Migration, IOM, which consisted of these actions:

-Removal by orientation of the Provincial Government of Iquique. Delivery of information regarding their immigration status, self-report procedures, mobility requirements within the national territory and general orientation.

-Temporary residence. IOM provision for the transfer of people to a temporary residence for a period of 7 days up to 14 days. The objective was for the migrants to self-manage their income and thus be able to rent or move to their final destination.

-Contribution for rent. IOM service that consisted of the contribution in the payment of rent for a period of 1 to 3 months.

-Humanitarian transfer. IOM service where family groups moved from Tarapacá to other regions for reasons of family reunification. This was done under the requirements and regulations of OIM; as well as under the sanitary protocols established by the Ministry of Health of Chile.

– Without solution. Migrants who express their intention to stay in Tarapacá because they do not have support networks, they do not have the economic resources, they are one-person groups and, finally, they do not possess or express greater interest in leaving the condition in which they find themselves.
