Every June 11 commemorates the International Prostate Cancer Day, which aims to assess the knowledge, risk factors and the importance of the prevention of this cancer that it is the leading cause of death in Mexico in men over 45 years of age.
According to José Armando Martínez Martínez, oncologist surgeon and head of oncology services at the General Hospital of Pachuca, this cancer, as well as breast, cervical and colon cancer, are the ones that occur the most in patients in Hidalgo.
He pointed out that prostate cancer develops due to the appearance of tumors in this organ “and at the General Hospital patients are supported from prevention, we attend to patients who come with a suspicion or a patient with a factor of risk, they are given guidance and those who have developed cancer have several treatment options, we can offer them from surgical treatment to chemotherapy treatment ”, he indicated.
In this context, he indicated that the treatment will depend on the stage in which the type of cancer is found and that the resources for cancer care depend on the type of disease in question, although he avoided specifying the amount that is allocated because He pointed out that it is an issue that the hospital managers carry.
Do you have to be a beneficiary to receive treatment?
“They are supported with drugs that come to us at the state level chemotherapeutic, treatment for cancer patients without eligibility It is completely free, they are not charged anything, they are supported in that aspect, “he explained.
Prostate cancer is the most common among the male population worldwide, but if there is an early diagnosis and thanks to improvements in treatment, in the last 25 years the survival rate has increased to 5 years.
Still the lack of information on prostate cancer prevails, and only 4 percent of men undergo some type of study for its detection, so it is necessary to provide health education to the male population and encourage prostate cancer tests to achieve an early diagnosis, otherwise a late result implies a negative state of health
How does prostate cancer develop?
According to various studies, this type of cancer is a tumor that arises from the acinar or ductal epithelium of the gland and can vary considerably in its glandular differentiation, anaplasia and behavior; In addition, it has the ability to invade other organs.
With advancing age, the incidence increases significantly, with histological evidence in 34 percent of men in their fifth decade of life and in 70 percent in their 80s. Associated with the projected demographic change in the population, its incidence is expected to increase.
90 percent of prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in people over 65 years of age and it is known to be related to environmental exposures, lifestyles, family history, and genetic factors.
This disease becomes important in public health for two main reasons: on the one hand there is its frequent appearance throughout the world, with a tendency to affect individuals under 50 years of age and on the other hand, the absence of symptoms in its initial phase , which together with the slow growth of the tumor, makes it go unnoticed by the patient, so its diagnosis is made when it has already spread outside the gland and this markedly reduces the chances of an evolution towards tumor regression.
Due to early diagnosis and improvements in treatment, in the last 25 years the survival rate has increased to five years for all stages combined by up to 99 percent, to 10 years with a rate of 93 percent, and to 15 years 79 percent.
