Princess Amalia waives her allowance for the time being. She turns eighteen in December and from that moment on she is entitled to such a 1.6 million euros per year. Just under 300,000 euros a year of this is income, the compensation for personnel and material expenses is more than 1.3 million.
Amalia now reports that she will not rely on the income part of her benefit until the end of her studies, and that “as long as she will not incur high costs in her position as Princess of Orange” she will also refund the expense allowance. The Crown Princess herself wrote a letter about this to outgoing Prime Minister Rutte, who informed the House of Representatives.
Amalia passed yesterday for her high school graduation. She is not going to do further education right away, but she wants to “explore the world first”. In her letter, the crown princess writes that she finds it “uncomfortable” to receive benefits as long as she can “offer little in return and other students have it so much more difficult, especially in this uncertain corona time”.
It has never happened before that a member of the Royal House waives the allowance.
The allowance for the Royal House is a theme almost every year when discussing the budget in the House of Representatives. In the run-up to her eighteenth birthday, there was also a discussion about the finances of the crown princess. Some MPs find the amount too high for Amalia.
