With films by Wes Anderson, Gaspar Noé, François Ozon, Nanni Moretti, Sean Penn, Kirill Serebrennikov, Paul Verhoeven, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Jacques Audiard and other international greats in the competition celebrate the 74th Cannes Film Festival “A great film year” from July 6th, as festival director Thierry Frémaux announced at a press conference on June 3rd.
Bill Murray will also come in person and present a music film in a special screening.
From an Austrian point of view, it is good news: two Austrian productions are running in the “Un Certain Regard” series.
Opening film
“Annette” by Leos Carax is the opening film, 24 films face the judgment of the jury led by Spike Lee, which will award the prizes on July 17th. Seven films in the competition come from France and three from the USA.
Wes Anderson, on the other hand, will finally see the new comedy “The French Dispatch”, which is about a fictional weekly magazine and its reporter leaves. The work should actually have been shown last year, but the corona pandemic makes that impossible. The same happened to Paul Verhoeven with his erotic nun drama “Benedetta”.
