Sciensano research: after vaccination, corona infections …

Research by Sciensano shows that fully vaccinated people in Belgium rarely experience a Covid infection. And when that happens, there are really only occasional symptoms of corona.

Sciensano looked at data up to May 31. At that time, 2 million Belgians were already fully vaccinated. 1,421,067 people were completely immune: the vaccine had been given two weeks to work properly. Of those 1.4 million protected persons, 4,526 so-called breakthrough infections have been identified. This therefore concerns a total of 0.32% of the protected group that still tested positive for the virus. Only 2.33% of all registered infections are breakthrough infections. According to Sciensano, this demonstrates the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign.

Difference Between Vaccines?

The same study also looked at information about symptoms. In 68.1% of cases, patients had no symptoms resembling Covid-19 when contacted for contact follow-up. Most infections were discovered accidentally during tests for reasons other than illness (travel, high-risk contact, screening…).

The intention is now that Sciensano will continue to monitor the breakthrough infections. The question of whether there is a difference between the vaccines could not yet be answered. But the health institute hopes to find an answer in the coming months.
