The Australian Maritime Safety Association (AMSA) reported that it will test the ship garbage recycling program.

According to the government institution, it is developing a coherent framework at the national level to support the recycling of international ships that visit ports in the country.

By virtue of Convenio Marpol For the prevention of pollution from ships, Australia must ensure that port reception facilities are available to meet the waste disposal needs of visiting international ships.

Following a successful pilot conducted in 2018 in the Brisbane Port and the Hay Point Harbor, In Queensland, AMSA is developing a framework that will address various challenges in accepting recycling from larger vessels. These include the remoteness of some terminals and access to reuse plants, without causing undue delays in shipping and ensuring that Australia’s biosecurity is not compromised.

“Providing international ships with an easy way to recycle their garbage on board while visiting Australian ports reduces the likelihood of waste being dumped illegally into their oceans. It is also an important part of Australia’s National Waste Plan, which aims to reduce landfills and improve the circular economy. ANSWER.

Meanwhile, in response to growing concerns, the OMI adopted an Action Plan to address marine plastic litter from ships, which identified the need to improve reception facilities to encourage recycling.
