The 20-year-old ran the course of his life in the 5,000 meters during the Diamond League gala in Florence – and broke a new European record with 12.48.45. It is one second and 26 hundredths faster than the Belgian Mohammed Mourhit’s previous record which stood for almost 21 years.
– It’s absolutely fantastic. There is a lot of hard work behind it. It is my first 5000-meter race in two years, so you never know where you stand, but at the same time I have run very fast in training, he tells NRK.
It is also a real polishing of Ingebrigtsen’s personal record. Earlier, the Norwegian had run on 13.02.03.
But he is not the only one who ran fast on Thursday night. Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan – who last week broke the world record in the 10,000 meters – ran 1,500 meters in 3.53.63, just over three seconds from Genzebe Dibaba’s six-year-old world record.
