Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show returns

Macy’s July 4 fireworks show is back this year, and will be the largest in the show’s history, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced.

“This is part of the New York City summer, New York City rebirth,” the mayor said. “Why is this possible? Because they have been vaccinated.”

Last year, due to concerns about COVID-19, the city held several smaller-than-usual fireworks shows. This year a great fireworks display will be held again, which will be launched from barges on the East River along Midtown Manhattan.

The show will begin at about 9:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, said Will Coss, the show’s executive producer.

New York City is back, and so is the @Macys! July 4 fireworks!” The Mayor wrote in a social media message with video of his press conference where he made the announcement.

Over the course of 25 minutes, fireworks professionals on five barges will launch 65,000 projectiles and effects, in line with the theme “The Hero Within”, as a salute to the resistance of Americans in the face of the pandemic.

For comparison, the 2019 deployment launched 25,000 projectiles from four barges along the Brooklyn Bridge.

At 8:00 p.m. a national broadcast will begin on NBC with performances by Coldplay, Reba McEntire, One Republic and other groups.

The Coney Island fireworks show will also return this year, starting shortly after Macy’s ends at around 10 p.m.
