French prosecutors are asking for 18 months in prison for the man who gave President Emmanuel Macron a school visit. Now the man regrets.
The incident happened on Tuesday when Macron went to a barricade to greet those present in the village of Tain-I’Hermitage in the south of the country. There he was properly beaten by the 28-year-old man.
The man was quickly arrested and charged, and on Thursday it became known that the prosecution is asking for an 18-month prison sentence for the incident. He also risks up to 45,000 euros in fines.
The 28-year-old explained himself in court on Thursday and said that the action was not planned and that he regretted it.
When asked why he did it, he explained that he had become angry about what he referred to as “France’s decay”.
– When I saw his friendly and lying gaze, I followed disgust and got a violent reaction. It was an impulsive act, and I was surprised by the violence.
– I think Emmanuel Macron represents the decay of our country, he said without explaining anything more what he meant by it.
Macron himself described the man as “ultra-violent”, but said that the incident did not deserve to be addressed in the public debate.
