Tampa Bay Rays prospect Tyler Zombro was released from Duke University Hospital Wednesday afternoon, six days after being hit in the head by a line during a game in Durham, North Carolina.
The Rays indicated that Zombro and his family will remain in Durham and to continue therapies for the player.
“The Rays extend their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff who cared for Tyler and continue to be overwhelmed by the support for his recovery,” the team said.
Zombro, a 26-year-old reliever for the Rays’ Triple-A branch, the Durham Bulls, had been in stable condition since June 3, when the incident occurred in the eighth inning of the game against the Norfolk Tides.
The Bulls reliever was hit in the face by a line that came off Brett Cumberland’s bat and immediately fell to the ground. His feet fluttered when a team doctor came to see him. Zombro was carried off the field on a stretcher.
Zombro has been in the Rays organization since 2017, when he signed as a rookie free agent. He has a 3.18 ERA this season and a 2.79 in his career in the minors.
