Miesje van der Stoel: Processes surrounding the formation of new blood vessels
Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing blood vessels. This process is regulated by collective migration of endothelial cells, cells that line the inner wall of a blood vessel.
During the formation of new blood vessels, the mechanical forces acting on that inner cell layer change, triggering all kinds of biochemical processes. This results in changes in gene expression, cell migration and cell division. Van der Stoel investigated certain aspects of this process.
