In view of the difficult epidemiological situation, the Board of FIBA Europe decided on 11 May to cancel the 2021 European Youth Championships. To ensure the practice of games, an informal competition series – FIBA ”Challengers” will be organized.

Participation is voluntary and the results will not affect the division into divisions in the 2022 European Youth Championships. Only the U-16 group tournaments, where the European representatives in the 2022 U-17 World Cup will be determined, will have a sporting significance.

U-20 women (year of birth 2001/2002). The tournament will take place from July 13 to 18, the Latvian team will play in Group A in Sofia. Opponents – Italy, Germany, Belgium, Croatia and Bulgaria.

U-18 juniores (2003/2004). From July 27 to August 1, the Group A tournament will take place in Riga. The Latvian team will play with units from Russia, Germany, Portugal, Croatia and Romania.

U-18 juniors (2003/2004). From August 3 to 8, in the group C tournament in the Turkish city of Konya, Latvian teams will play with Russian, Turkish, Slovenian, Polish and Czech teams.

U-16 cadets (2005 and later). From August 9 to 14, in the Group A tournament in Helsinki, the Latvian team will play with the national teams of France, Germany, Greece, Finland and Bulgaria. The winners of the first two places will get the right to participate in the U-17 World Cup in 2022.

U-16 cadets (2005 and younger). From August 16 to 21, the Latvian team will compete with the Spanish, Croatian, German, Polish and Bulgarian teams in the Group B tournament in Sofia. One team will get the right to participate in the U-17 World Cup in 2022 (Spain is already guaranteed a place as the organizers of the tournament).

The teams are divided into groups, taking into account the results of the respective year’s teams in the European Youth Championships in 2019 (in U-16 tournaments – taking into account the results achieved in the previous three seasons in the U-16 group).

The LBS Coaches Commission considered the participation of Latvian teams in five FIBA ”Challengers” tournaments to be purposeful. The U-20 men’s team was not entered, as some of the candidates are already included in professional clubs and some will participate in the U-19 World Cup.
