LIVE | Light at the end of the corona tunnel is getting closer | Inland

This article will be updated throughout the day.

08.30 – ‘Conductors concerned about aggressive behavior due to corona rules’

Conductors and drivers are concerned about aggressive behavior by travelers and poor compliance with the corona measures on the train. This is the outcome of a poll among 112 conductors, train drivers and service employees of NS by the trade union CNV.

Failure to comply with the mask obligation in particular causes tensions, says negotiator Ike Wiersinga of CNV Vakmensen. “NS employees sometimes feel like a kindergarten teacher. They regularly experience very unpleasant situations in which travelers can become quite aggressive verbally.”

The NS employees notice that the fuses are getting shorter, also between passengers. In the poll, 37 percent say they regularly notice that there are discussions or tensions between travelers about the corona rules. It is not only about whether or not to wear a mouth cap, but also about discussions about keeping distance.

More than 70 percent of NS employees say that travelers do not always understand that in practice it is impossible to keep a distance of 1.5 meters from each other on the train. Wiersinga: “It regularly happens that people do not want to sit next to each other and then think that they have the right to travel first class, where there are more empty seats.”

The increasing crowds in trains are worrying NS employees. More than 54 percent are (greatly) concerned about the risks of contamination if they have to walk through crowded trains, have to get close to travelers for ticket control or have to open and close the doors on crowded balconies.

The survey also shows that NS employees often do not (or no longer) report unpleasant or aggressive situations. Only 27 percent say they have reported aggressive behavior to NS. “That is striking, because the poll shows that there are many more incidents. These are therefore not reported and remain under the radar. That is not good. We call on everyone to continue to report incidents,” says Wiersinga. “It is worrying that 60 percent indicate that the social safety of employees is insufficiently guaranteed in this corona time. Although NS is already doing a lot, it is apparently not enough.”

7.55 – ‘Corona vaccination of elderly people living at home very effective’

The vaccination against corona of people over 75 living at home is very effective, reports the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). These seniors are 82 percent protected against infection from three weeks after the second injection. The protection against hospitalization from three weeks after the second shot was 94 percent and against death from the corona virus also 94 percent.

In the first eight weeks after the start of the vaccination program, both elderly people living at home and nursing home residents showed a sharp decrease in the number of positive corona tests, hospital admissions and deaths.

RIVM draws this conclusion after an analysis now that, more than four months after the start of the vaccination programme, sufficient data is available on mobile elderly people living at home. They have been vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine since January 26 of this year.

7.00 – Light at the end of the corona tunnel is getting closer

The corona wave is almost a thing of the past. The number of positive tests continues to fall, thanks to vaccinations and the warmer weather. About 15,000 people have probably tested positive in the past week. That would be the lowest weekly figure since September.

The exact number will come from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on Tuesday. At the end of April, the institute received more than 55,000 reports in seven days. By the end of May, that number had fallen to just over 20,000.

In the six days since the last update, 12,958 new corona cases have been registered. On average, there are 2160 per day. This could bring the weekly figure around 15,000. That would be almost 27 percent less than last week.

In the weekly update, RIVM also calculates how many corona patients were admitted to hospitals in the past week. Last week there were 533 new hospital admissions, of which 112 patients ended up in intensive care. RIVM also reports on Tuesday how many deaths from corona have been registered in the past week. Last week there were 66. These figures are also considerably lower than the weeks before.

On Tuesday, RIVM also calculates the new reproduction number, which indicates how quickly or slowly the coronavirus is spreading. Last Friday it stood at 0.86. In the past seven days, approximately one million Dutch people have probably received a shot, comparable to the weeks before. RIVM will also publish that figure on Tuesday.

6.19 – Daily infections in India drop below 100,000

For the first time in more than two months, the number of corona infections in India has fallen below 100,000. In the past 24 hours, 86,498 cases have been registered, the Indian health authorities announced on Tuesday. About 29 million inhabitants have been infected since the start of the pandemic.

The number of corona deaths rose by 2123 and now stands at more than 350,000. India is one of the hardest hit countries in the world by the corona virus, only the US has more infections.

3.54 – Hospitals investigate effect of third injection in vulnerable patient

Hospitals occasionally see corona patients with a weak immune system being admitted, while they are fully vaccinated. That is why they are investigating whether vulnerable patients need more injections to be well protected against the corona virus, the AD writes.

According to the newspaper, several hospitals note that even after two vaccinations, people are sometimes so sick that they have to be admitted. With two shots, they are not yet sufficiently protected against the virus. “But those are not people who are otherwise very healthy,” says Bram Goorhuis, coordinator of the corona departments of Amsterdam UMC and internist. It concerns people with a weak immune system, for example because they already have a certain disease or because they use drugs that affect the immune system.

Doctors and scientists are now investigating whether these patients need more than two shots. “We would prefer to protect those patients as well. It could work if we offer more injections,” says Goorhuis. This has already been decided in France before. Vulnerable patients receive a third vaccination after four weeks.

The hospitals investigate diverse groups. For example, the immune response of approximately 800 people, including more than 500 patients receiving chemotherapy or immunotherapy, is measured four weeks after the second vaccination. “Then we hope to see which patients do not have a good response. This may depend on age, type of cancer and therapy. We don’t know,” says Liesbeth de Vries, professor of medical oncology at UMC Groningen.

Still, the hospitals see that the vaccinations work well for most people. It is not surprising that people still become seriously ill, especially after their first injection, according to Annemarie Buntsma, spokesperson for the Flevoziekenhuis. “This picture fits within the ‘margin of error’ of vaccination studies, where there is no 100 percent coverage, but there is a much smaller chance of admission,” said Buntsma.

3.31 – Curaçao abolishes curfew after more than a year

From Tuesday, after more than a year, there will no longer be a curfew on Curaçao. Nearly 70 percent of the adult population has now had a corona vaccination.

More than 85,000 residents have had one shot. In total, more than 70,000 people have been vaccinated twice.

More measures are being relaxed for residents. People who have been vaccinated twice and fly back to Curaçao from low-risk countries do not need to take a PCR test before departure. The antigen test three days after your return is no longer required. Passengers who have been vaccinated twice and come back from high-risk countries must still take an antigen test on Curaçao.

The curfew on Curaçao went into effect in March 2020.

3.19 – Aruba no longer makes face masks mandatory for vaccinated people

In Aruba, people who have been fully vaccinated as of June 9 are no longer required to wear a face mask. The government announced this on Monday. Companies are still allowed to make a mouth cap mandatory in their business, but the government thinks that little use will be made of it.

Two corona infections were registered on Monday. In total, 41 Arubans were infected that day and eleven non-residents. Since the start of the crisis, 107 corona patients have died on the island, including one non-resident. Because the number of infections has been low for a long time, the government believes it is responsible to implement further relaxation.

For example, the public is allowed again at sports competitions. Dancing is still banned. There are also fewer travel restrictions. Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire will form a ‘bubble’ from Wednesday, which means that travelers between those countries who have been vaccinated twice do not have to show tests.

Furthermore, the island again attracts many tourists, especially Americans. In May of this year, the number of visitors was more than seventy percent of the number who came to Aruba in the same month in 2019. Also this week, just like on Curaçao, a cruise ship will dock for the first time in a year. Sint Maarten had the scoop of the Caribbean islands of the Kingdom and received a cruise ship for the first time a few days ago.
