The Effects of the June 10 Ring Solar Eclipse on Earth According to Science

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Ring Solar Eclipse (GMC) which will occur on June 10 this week will cause a number of effects on Earth ranging from high tides to affecting the ionosphere layer that can disrupt telecommunications.

This was conveyed by the Head of the Center for Technical Seismology, Potential Geophysics and Time Signs of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Rahmat Triyono.

“In general, the visible impact is the tide,” said Rahmat to CNNIndonesia.com, Monday (7/6).

Rahmat said the tides during the GMC were due to the maximum gravity of the Moon and Sun during the eclipse.

However, Rahmat said that the effect of tides on a location due to GMC depends also on the topographical conditions of the beach.

Disrupt telecommunications

In addition to sea tides, previously Head of the National Aeronautics and Space Institute (LAPAN) Thomas Djamaludin said GMC could interfere with telecommunications frequencies that use the ionosphere.

According to Thomas, the disruption of telecommunications activities is due to the lack of light intensity on earth. A solar eclipse affects the ionosphere, which is a layer of air about 100 kilometers above the earth’s surface.

During the eclipse, Thomas said there would be a decrease in ionization in the layer. The ionosphere layer plays a role in accelerating the frequencies commonly used for communication networks.

“The reduction in light intensity during the solar eclipse phase may also have an effect on the ionosphere for some time,” he said.

GMC when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are exactly in line and at that time the Moon’s disk observed from Earth is smaller than the Sun’s disk.

This time, the GMC can only be seen on Ellesmere and Baffin Islands (Canada) and Siberia (Russia) with maximum visibility occurring at 17.43.05 WIB / 18.43.05 WITA / 19.43.05 WIT.

Meanwhile, regions such as Greenland, Iceland, Europe, Russia, Central Asian countries and Western China can witness the GMC.
