Matt Doherty regret Jose Mourinho can’t last long in Tottenham Hotspur. According to him, Spurs players had a hand in Mourinho’s sacking.
Mourinho only lasted 18 months at Spurs before finally being sacked at the end of April, or a few days before his appearance in the English League Cup final. Spurs’ poor form from the start of the year was the reason.
Had topped the Premier League standings in early December, Spurs instead dropped drastically to seventh because of a series of poor results. Not to mention, Mourinho is reportedly involved in a dispute with several Spurs players.
Spurs were also knocked out early in the FA Cup and kicked out of the Europa League last 16 by Dinamo Zagreb. Even though Spurs have made several player purchases in the transfer market last summer according to Mourinho’s wishes.
But, according to Doherty, who was a Spurs purchase at the start of the season, admits that he and the players did not perform according to Mourinho’s expectations. Moreover, Mourinho has only worked for 18 months so he does not have much time to form a team according to his wishes.
“He’s only been here for 18 months. If it’s been 3-4 years, then the story will be different. But, we really couldn’t achieve the results he wanted,” said Doherty at Sky Sports.
“The manager is always the victim, but as players, we are the ones who appear on the pitch and we can’t get the best results for him. It’s a shame because he is one of the best managers in the world,” he continued.
After sacking Mourinho, Spurs are now looking for a replacement. Antonio Conte, who had been linked, finally failed to get it because he did not find an agreement on salary and transfer funds.
Several potential replacements such as Brendan Rodgers, Ralf Rangnick, and Graham Potter appeared to the public.
