Enforce the rules or get ready for action!
The Center issued a final notice to Twitter, the world’s most popular social media company, for delaying the hiring of civil servants in India by three months under the new information technology law, warning that ‘he will take action under computer and criminal law.
According to new guidelines introduced by the central government in February, social media companies are required to appoint resident agents, compliance officers and divisional license officers in India by May 26. Twitter has been instructed several times, but Twitter refused. Therefore, this final notification has been sent. As a result, the conflict between the central government and Twitter escalated. The government has warned that Twitter will lose its obligation under the computer law if the rules are not followed.
Twitter has so far refused to play by the rules. “Twitter does not appear to be trying to provide security on the platform for Indian citizens, but it is not even engaged,” the Ministry of Informatics said in a statement. Twitter has been operating in India for over a decade. However, Twitter has firmly refused to put in place a mechanism to resolve the grievances of Indian citizens in a timely and transparent manner. The ministry said the case was inconsistent.
From May 26, Twitter was required to comply with the new rules. But the social media company didn’t follow the rules. But in good faith, the company gets one last chance. However, the ministry warned that Twitter would take action under the Information Technology Act and other criminal laws if it broke the rules. However, the deadline for complying with the rules is not mentioned in the notice. The department also said Indians who use Twitter should have appropriate mechanisms in place to resolve their grievances.
