Washington (AP) – US President Joe Biden will meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in the White House on Monday. Among other things, the meeting will be about the summit of the North Atlantic Alliance in Brussels in a week, which Biden will be attending during his first trip abroad as US President. The topic in Washington will also be the various challenges for NATO, including the role of Russia and China as well as the threats from cyber attacks and climate change.
During his two-day visit to the American capital on Monday (11.00 a.m. local time / 5.00 p.m. CEST), Stoltenberg will also meet Pentagon boss Lloyd Austin. In addition, NATO announced meetings with US security advisor Jake Sullivan and members of Congress.
The NATO summit will take place on June 14th. Relations between the United States and many allies were severely strained under Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump. Biden has promised to bring the tense relationship back to normal. In the course of his trip, the Democrat will also take part in the meeting of the heads of state and government of the seven major industrialized nations (G7) in the south-west English county of Cornwall and an EU-US peak meeting on June 15 in Brussels, before his on June 16 in Geneva meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
