Dessau-Rosslau – In Dessau-Roßlau, the politically most important day of the year began on Sunday. The residents can vote twice: like all Saxony-Anhalters, they vote on the new state parliament and also elect a new mayor for the next seven years.
Eight candidates, exclusively men, are in the running for the OB post: Eiko Adamek (CDU), Robert Reck, Karsten Lückemeyer, Sebastian Rumberg, Jakob Uwe Weber, Frank Lehmann (all non-party) as well as Ralf-Peter Weber (Greens) and Lutz Büttner from the AfD. If none of the candidates get an absolute majority, i.e. 50.1 percent, there is a runoff between the two candidates with the highest result.
Dessau-Roßlau lies in the area of two constituencies for the state election of Saxony-Anhalt
Dessau-Roßlau is in the area of two constituencies: constituency 26, which includes the western parts of the city and localities, and 27, which extends into the Wittenberger Land. A direct candidate from each of these constituencies, for whom the first vote is cast, moves into the state parliament. Direct candidates are the CDU, SPD, Left, Greens, FDP and AFD. In constituency 27, the Free Voters also have a direct candidate. The second vote, however, benefits the party as a whole. The more second votes it can collect, the more candidates on its list it can send to Magdeburg.
57 polling stations in Dessau-Roßlau opened punctually at 8 a.m.
The 57 polling stations in Dessau-Roßlau opened punctually at 8 a.m. and stay open until 6 p.m. It is assumed, however, that many of the 65,000 OB and 67,000 Landtag voters have already voted in advance by letter. The city has set up 40 postal voting stations for this purpose.
In the evening around 750 election workers will first count the ballot papers for the state elections and only then those for the mayor’s office. It is possible that it will not be known until late at night who will make it to the runoff election or who will win directly. (mz)
