In the June polls, the CDU won 27 to 30 percent of the vote, but by mid-May its popularity was at 25 percent. This was less than the support of AfD, which would be chosen by up to 26 percent of respondents. Surveys suggest that the AfD, described as populist to far-right, could improve its outcome of the provincial election five years ago, when 24.3 percent of voters voted for it.
