The successor to the Toyota Aygo will continue to be the smallest A-segment car. However, it is still unclear whether it will not turn into a tiny crossover.

Toyota will produce a new A-segment model in its Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic plant in Cologne, which are minivans. The company has now officially confirmed the anticipated report. The company’s spokesman Tomáš Paroubek will announce the start of production, its expected volume and the name of the car in the future.
The new car will use the Toyota GA-B platform. Three mini-cars are produced in Cologne – Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1, but their current generation is gradually coming to an end. And within termination of Toyota’s cooperation with Peugeot and Citroën in this area, only the car of the Japanese brand will receive a successor. From this year, production of the larger Toyota Yaris hatchback segment will also begin here.
“We are convinced that this model will make a significant contribution to Toyota’s growth in the European market – this is fully in line with our involvement in the region. At the same time, it will be an affordable car that will bring segment A customers to our brand. It will be manufactured on the same platform as Yaris and Yaris Cross, which will bring us economies of scale – this aspect is crucial for small car production, “said Marvin Executive Vice President Toyota Motor Europe Cook.

In any case, the appearance this year was indicated by the Aygo X prologue concept, which also confirmed that Toyota is flirting with the idea of a miniature crossover.. Even from the carmaker, there are already reports that the replacement for the Aygo may not be a classic mini-car, but an SUV of the A segment. The car should be introduced later this year, with its sales starting during 2022.
The company employs about 2,500 people in Cologne, last year on April 1 it started recruiting new employees for the production of the Yaris model, it wants to hire up to 1,000 employees. It represents one of the largest exporters in the Czech Republic and at the same time the largest employer in the Kolín region. According to the Association of the Automotive Industry, the production of cars at the Cologne car manufacturer fell by 26.4 percent to 147,865 cars last year.
