Berrettini against Kwon
—
The fourth and last Italian in the race is Matteo Berrettini who on the field named after Simone Mathieu (the famous Serre field) will face the Korean Soonwoo Kwon at 5.30 pm. There are no precedents: Kwon has never reached the round of 16 in a Grand Slam while Berrettini has already succeeded in Wimbledon 2019 (eighths beaten by Federer), US Open 2019 (semifinal beaten by Nadal), US Open 2020 (eighths passed by Rublev ) and Australian Open 2021 (retired before playing in the round of 16 against Tsitsipas). An Italian tennis player, the winner between Musetti and Cecchinato, will certainly be in the round of 16. Last year we had 2 (Sonego and Sinner), the last time we qualified three was at Roland Garros in 1962 (Pietrangeli, Merlo and Jacobini), the only time we had 4 at Roland Garros del 1947 (Quintavalle, Cucelli, Belardinelli and Sada).
