Why we extended Giroud and Thiago Silva’s contracts

Chelsea have explained why the club have extended the contracts of Olivier Giroud and Thiago Silva.

On Friday, the reigning Champions League winners extended Giroud and Silva’s contracts by one year.

Giroud’s current deal was set to expire at the end of this campaign, but an extension means the Frenchman’s three-and-a-half-year stay at Stamford continues for another year.

Chelsea also exercised an option to extend Silva’s contract for a year, taking his time at the West London club for a second season.

Explaining why Chelsea extended the contracts of the two players, club manager Marina Granovskaia said on Chelsea’s website: “Olivier has been a crucial part of so many great moments for this club, of his contribution to our victory in the FA Cup in 2018 to score 11 goals en route to winning the Europa League in 2019.

“He continued to score important goals, and we will never forget his efforts against Atletico Madrid on their way to Champions League victory this season.

“With so much to play, there was only one decision we could make when we exercised the option to extend his contract in April. “

Commenting on Silva, Granovskaia added: “When we brought in Thiago Silva last summer, we knew we were adding a world class player to the squad. Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has been a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.

“We said upon signing that we were hopeful Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honors, and he did so with our Champions League success this weekend. We now hope that it will continue in exactly the same way over the coming year.
