Canadian MFA meets with Iraqi counterpart

AA / Montreal / Hatem Kattou

Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau held talks with his Iraqi counterpart Fouad Hussein on Friday, Canadian diplomacy reported.

This is what emerges from a short press release posted online, Friday afternoon, by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its official page of the “Facebook” social network, and which was consulted by Anadolu.

“Minister (Marc) Garneau met today (Friday) with his Iraqi counterpart, Minister Fouad Hussein,” the statement read.

On this occasion, the press release continued, Minister Garneau reiterated to his Iraqi counterpart “the continued support provided by Canada to Iraq”.

This support is illustrated, according to the Canadian foreign minister, “through the strategy adopted by Ottawa for the Middle East region and its contributions to NATO and to the global coalition” to fight against the terrorism, the statement concludes.

It should be noted that the Canadian government announced, on March 30, the one-year extension of the maintenance of its Armed Forces in the Middle East to continue to improve security and stability in the region.

The Canadian Ministry of Defense would like to point out on its website that the Mission of its troops in Iraq is not part of a “combat mission, but rather a mission of providing advice on institutional reforms aimed at profound changes with, for and by the Iraqi Defense Ministry and the Iraqi Armed Forces, thus contributing to the assurance of lasting security and stability ”.

This is the third telephone interview conducted this week by Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau with one of his Arab counterparts from the Middle East region.

On Monday, the holder of the Canadian diplomacy portfolio spoke with Sameh Shoukry and Ayman Safadi, respectively, foreign ministers of Egypt and Jordan.

According to two separate press releases released by “Global Affairs Canada”, Marc Garneau discussed with the Shoukry and Safadi the “situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the efforts to achieve peace.”

Only part of the dispatches, which the Anadolu Agency broadcasts to its subscribers via the Internal Distribution System (HAS), is broadcast on the AA website, in a summary manner. Please contact us to subscribe.
