Comment: The example of Franz Reindl shows that sports officials use all their tricks

It’s about money and power: sport has an image problem – mostly officials are responsible for that. It is not enough just to look at athletic performance.

Sport has an image problem. This has less to do with his athletes, who are in the public eye. Rather, it is about the management staff at the top of the associations and organizations. The most recent example is German ice hockey. There it is fermenting behind the scenes. The reason is the less transparent behavior of DEB President Franz Reindl.

It shows once again that in sport it is not enough to simply follow the performances of the athletes. All tricks are used behind the glittering backdrop. Because the sport there is no different from the rest of the world. It’s about money and it’s about power.

In some associations structures have formed over the years that make it easy for the characters involved to put personal advantage over sport. Often there is a lack of control. Committees responsible for this either only exist on paper or they are made up of loyal companions. The external critical gaze is not particularly popular with those to whom it is directed. They prefer to bask in the success of their athletes. The German national ice hockey team is very successful right now. After sunbathing, however, Reindl could face stormy times.
