The American football team of TuS Fürstenfeldbruck, the Fursty Razorbacks, will start the new season of the 2nd Bundesliga on Saturday. Bad Homburg is the opponent.
Fürstenfeldbruck – The Fursty Razorbacks have been able to call themselves second division since their promotion in the 2019 season. But the TuS-Footballer from Bruck play their first league game in this class with a full year delay. After the corona-related cancellation of the 2020 season, the Bruckers celebrate their return to the second highest German division with an away game on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Bad Homburg.
Assessing your opponent is difficult after a year without a game. “I tried to find out a bit,” says Bruck’s new head coach Lukas Schmid. “But it’s difficult.” Ultimately, all he has to do is expect to meet a well-adjusted opponent. What is known: The Hessians are a fairly young, but all the more ambitious club. The Sentinels were only founded in 2015.
After that it went steeply uphill: the ascent could be celebrated every year. In the 2019 season, the Sentinels finally finished second in the Regionalliga Mitte. With two clear wins against Rüsselsheim, the Hessians moved into GFL 2 in record time – and had to wait as long for their debut there as the Razorbacks because of the pandemic.
The Bruckers have their baptism of fire behind them this year: In the test match at the first division club Schwäbisch Hall, it was the expected significant defeat. Nevertheless, the Bruckers sold well. The attack got better and better as the game played.
The moves went better than expected after such a long break. “We are satisfied with our current level of performance and were able to take a lot with us from the game against Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns,” says Schmid. He saw some catching up to do in the defense of the opposing punts and kickoffs, where the razorbacks often had no access to the opponent.
In terms of personnel, the Bruckers are still a little worried about one of their three US boys. Troy Porter sustained a biceps injury in the friendly. Schmid is hopeful that the American, who is supposed to protect his playmaker Philipp Kettl from the opposing defense on the field, can play. “He’ll go to the doctor before the game, but I think he’ll play,” said the head coach.
In addition to Porter, the focus is also on other newcomers: Passport recipient Malik Brown already knew how to impress in Schwäbisch Hall. With Ronald Tomasello, a pass defender was brought in from the USA at short notice. Ball carriers Felix Wenz and Anthony Walker, who attracted attention in Schwäbisch Hall, are also considered newcomers. Both came to the Amper after the promotion from Feldkirchen, but had to wait a year for their debut in the jersey of the Razorbacks. Schmid: “We look forward to the challenge of GFL 2.”
