Corona laboratory diagnostics: Bavaria receives more money than others

So far, more money has flowed to Bavaria for corona laboratory tests than to other federal states. For laboratory diagnostics, the Free State received almost 214 million euros by May 17, 2021, according to a list by the Federal Social Security Office. The significantly more populous North Rhine-Westphalia received just under 207 million euros from this pot.

Lots of PCR tests in Bavarian laboratories

The laboratory diagnostic services are in particular the so-called PCR tests. These are significantly more complex and therefore more expensive than the meanwhile widespread rapid antigen tests. In July 2020, Bavaria was the first country to introduce extensive corona tests for everyone without symptoms. At that time, however, there were practically no quick test alternatives.

In a country comparison, Bavaria has so far received significantly more money from the federal government for corona tests than, for example, Baden-Württemberg. A total of almost 318 million euros flowed into the Free State for the various test offers. Only about 197 million euros went to the neighboring state.

The difference in population between the two countries is not so clear: According to the Federal Statistical Office, Bavaria has 13.1 million inhabitants, about two million more than Baden-Württemberg.

The federal government paid out 1.7 billion to states for the corona test

As expected, however, the Federal Office transferred most of the money to what is by far the largest federal state. North Rhine-Westphalia with its 17.9 million inhabitants received almost 484 million euros from the federal pot. In total, the federal government had paid out 1.7 billion to the states for corona tests.
