In the United Kingdom, the number of corona infections has risen by two thirds in a week. About 100,000 people were infected in the week to May 29, according to the British statistics agency, compared to 60,000 a week earlier.
An increasing part of the infections is with the Indian variant, reports de BBC. In areas where this more contagious variant occurs, the health services are testing extra intensively. As a result, the increase in the number of infections may appear to be more severe than the actual increase.
The largest increases within the United Kingdom are in England and Wales. In England, 1 in 640 people had Covid-19 last week, compared to 1 in 1120 the week before. In Wales it grew from 1 in 3850 to 1 in 1050.
According to a professor of medicine, it is not yet clear whether the extra infections also lead to more hospital admissions. “We know for sure that if you’ve had one or two doses of the vaccine, you’re less likely to get infected. And if you do, you’re less likely to end up in the hospital.”
