With around 10,000 square meters, Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz is the largest square in Hamburg’s HafenCity. It was inaugurated on Friday.

Anyone who strolls from the Elbbrücken U- and S-Bahn station to Baakenhafen is immersed in a landscape of curved brick walls, wooden benches and 87 larger trees. Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz is almost as big as the Rathausmarkt and slopes towards the water.

“Attractive focal point for public life”

Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) was one of the first visitors. At the inauguration, he said: “With Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz, the Elbbrücken district will have an attractive focal point for public life in the Hafencity.” The place already invites you to linger. But the real attractiveness will only grow with the Elbbrücken district, which is now emerging. Among other things, 16-story office buildings are being built there, all of which are ecologically ideal.

In the shadow of the Elbtower

But in the mornings the square will be darkened in a few years, as the CEO of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg, admitted: “You have a wandering shadow. With its 245 meters height, the Elbtower will let its shadow wander over the place.”

The square bears the name of the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who explored the east coast of South America around 1500. America was named after him. But there is also criticism of the naming. Amerigo Vespucci was also a slave trader, according to the critics.
