On the occasion of the celebration of World Environment Day, the space of resistance and climate claim “Rebellion for Climate Córdoba” has summoned the citizens and civil society organizations of the city of Córdoba to a concentration on Saturday 5th at 11.00 in the morning at the Puerta del Puente.
The objective of this call is to draw attention once again to the climate emergency situation and imminent collapse in which we find ourselves. Under the slogan ‘There is no Planet B’, the platform aims to “return to the streets to meet and recognize ourselves as people with the ability to organize, mobilize and move towards an economic, energy and social model capable of respecting the limits of people and the ecosystems”.
For ten years, environmental and related organizations have already pointed out the need to decrease in a fair way, from the local but globally, while attending to the various situations of vulnerability and social exclusion (which they attributed to the global relations of domination and oppression). Today these same organizations, gathered on the platform, warn us: “There is no more time, we are decreasing: fossil energies (oil, coal, gas, etc.) are running out, and with them a way of life that for years has reduced biodiversity and has changed the climate, thus unleashing natural phenomena of great magnitude and generating humanitarian emergencies and climatic migratory movements that will be increasingly frequent.
“But this decrease, far from occurring in a fair and equitable manner, is aggravating situations of inequality, within the framework of an increasingly savage neoliberalism (which is materialized in successive environmental deregulations) and a rise in neofascisms. No It is no wonder. Maintaining this opulent model of life and these privileges while our livelihoods are depleted will only be possible for a shrinking elite. “
The city of Córdoba is especially sensitive to climate change because it supports extreme temperatures, especially in summer. However, it lacks concrete measures to face the current climate crisis, such as the use of bioclimatic materials in urban architecture, or the care and expansion of urban and peri-urban trees. In addition, the City Council has not launched a single initiative to make effective the Institutional Declaration of Climate Emergency approved unanimously by the Municipal Plenary on December 14, 2019, and the Municipal Plan against Climate Change to which it is bound by the Andalusian Law of Measures against Climate Change has not even begun to be elaborated.
Climate Rebellion Córdoba understands that the time to wait for ambitious government actions in the face of the climate emergency has run out, and urges to organize a global climate movement capable of empowering itself and generating its own roadmap, capable of challenging the power of the fossil industry and committing to a just transition towards a model that respects our limits and those of our planet.
Rebellion for Climate Córdoba is a movement of movements and organizations of great diversity, whose main purpose is to coordinate for non-violent action in the face of the climate and ecological crisis, under the umbrella of social and environmental justice. It arises as a local action node in Córdoba, following the model of the state platform 2020 Rebelión por el Clima (https://2020rebelionporelclima.net).
