Kees Kist does not understand the choice of Frank de Boer to let the Dutch national team play in a 5-3-2 system. According to the AZ club icon, that does not fit at all with Orange.
“No! it is the total rape of Dutch football”, says Kist to The Telegraph. “I sat very angry in front of the TV for ninety minutes. This is so The Netherlands not own. We have been playing football for decades from a style in which we want to be dominant on the field. That’s always been the case. We are a football country that plays openly, that puts pressure and therefore often dominates. All opponents take that into account.”
Moreover, the plan of the national coach turned out completely wrong, judges the 21-time Orange international. “With five men in the back we still concede two goals. Then I don’t know what we are doing. How can there still be such gaps with five defenders? I understand that as a coach you want to try something out, but this system is for countries like Italy or other defensive countries. Just go back to 4-3-3, pressure and secure the opponent in their own half. We are much better at that.”
Kist thinks that De Boer makes a ‘messy’ impression. “He appears restless. That may also have to do with his doubts about the system. Is this going well? I would opt for certainty. Frank has to say: “Nice all those discussions around it, only I will play like that. nothing to do with anyone, I’ll take that 4-3-3 back’. Then you will see that it goes better.”
